Today was the perfect day for a nice 30 mile ride as it was cool enough to add pace to the ride. I had to fit 2 new tyres / tubes due to a shredded tyre recently in the morning. The tyre Scwalbe Marathon plus 700 x 35 to my hybrid MTB. The original size was 38’s and knobbly, but these are 35 / not much bobble bits as I wanted to bias the bike for rode touring with a view to getting rid of my road bike as I have no room for it. The tyres are hard wire type with a huge insert to prevent puncture. The manufacturer shows tacks being pushed in on the main section with no effect. The tre is a little heavy but fine for me. Lucky thing guys had vids on you tube to fit them. I also added new tubes with slime as a second layer of protection against punctures. Also this was to be a fast ride no stops for the 30 mls hoping to match or beat the PB of the Focus Cayo 2.0 carbon road bike. Currently the MTB rides nice and comfortable so hit the first 5 mls hard to get ahead and went 2 mins up before my hill climb towards Ipswich Old Norwich road. Wind was a bit head on at the Sproughton stretch so heart rate was a little high at 125 which is close to my “performance” zone.
I prefer to churn out the miles at 110-120 for the fat burn effect and not blow out in the later stages of the ride. Colchester Road was very busy slowing up several riders and coincidentally there was 8 of us riding single file in the temporary cycle lane, which must have frustrated the fast guys tracking me at 15mph. As soon as they could they all left me for dead so must be riding 20 mph +. After 15 miles around the Purdis golf course again I was 5 mins up which is a lot so I upped the pace on the link road towards Felixstowe. I felt fresh and think I am now ready to crack 50 miles non stop. Though about it, by heading to Felixstowe and riding round it, but time was 6pm and it was getting late. The bike only has flashing LED’s not good enough for night. Turned right on the Old Felixstowe road for 3 final sprints (HITT style training) 1 minute flat out and 2 mins cruising rotations 3 times. That shaved another minute off PB so now have 6 mins to spare with 10 miles to go. The MTB is now spot on for touring comfort, and I now have a decent pump + gas canister and spare chain link to avoid the walk of shame if possible! Having banked 6 mins and the app encouraging me I trailed to bikers who had overtaken me along the Henley road stretch, but wasn’t pulling away. In fact I was gaining riding at 17mph on the level road, but unfortunately turning left towards Whitton there was a car accident which was cordoned off and completely killed the ride as I had to walk road the obstacles. No one was injured but the parties were arguing whilst the cops were taking data. I should have stopped the app manually as it kept recording as I was moving, but tried hard to get back some time on the downhill stretch to Claydon and river level. Didn’t get a great max speed with only 26.2 mph. The road bike does 30 mph here most times, but momentum kept me going up the hill the otherside. I now hit some more breeze along the stretch from Claydon to Sproughton and my speed went down to 13mph instead of 15 mph. I was on PB but had no spare time so with 5 miles to go I gave up the PB attempt and just cruised home. My MTB is the bike of choice at the moment, but will use the road bike for the next 2 rides then decide its fate. Cals today was 2832, and the ride took 2 hrs 17 mins for the 30 miles around 13 mph average.
